Course Name: Materials and Methods of the Artist
Professor: Susan G. Scott
Credits: 6

Calendar Description: Through a series of special projects in the media of drawing and painting, this course familiarizes the student with some of the historical materials, techniques, and other aspects of the artist’s concerns.
Objectives: Although this course is named materials and methods, equal focus is on the creation of paintings and drawings that show the formal and aesthetic sophistication required of a 400 level student.
Methodology: In class work, lectures, demonstrations, class discussions and field trips will be held. The first semester there will be 2 x 4 week sessions working with different mediums and grounds. First semester will cover gesso, egg tempera, fresco secco, and time permitting, encaustic. The second semester will start with oil glazing and then focusing on 2 previously learned methods, the student will write a coherent proposal or work plan outlining a subject matter and techniques they wish to explore further and work on their own in an attempt to gain understanding of those techniques in relation to their own vision.
